Size Guide

All charts show body measurements, not garment measurements. For technical outdoor use, choose your size from body data first, then adjust for layering and fit preference. If your numbers fall between sizes, see the fit notes under each table.

Units:

Men’s Tops

Body measurements in inches. Arm length from center back neck to wrist.

Size Chest in Waist in Hip in Arm in
S 34–36 28–30 35–37 32.5–33
M 38–40 32–34 38–40 33.5–34
L 42–44 36–38 41–43 34.5–35
XL 46–48 40–42 44–46 35.5–36
2XL 50–52 44–46 47–49 36.5–37
3XL 54–56 48–50 50–52 37–37.5

Between chest and waist sizes: use chest for jackets, waist for pants. Between sizes for layering: go one size up.

Men’s Bottoms

Numeric waist sizes. Inseam shown regular; short/tall available on selected styles.

Waist tag Waist in Hip in Inseam R in Inseam T in
30 30–31 37–38 31 34
32 32–33 39–40 32 34
34 34–35 41–42 32 34
36 36–37 43–44 32 34
38 38–39 45–46 32 34
40 40–41 47–48 32 34

Base & insulation bottoms

Base layers run next-to-skin; insulation/rain bottoms use the same waist tag but add room. If wearing heavy base layers, stay true to waist tag or size up one for insulated shells.

Women’s Tops

Body measurements in inches. Arm length from center back neck to wrist.

Size Chest in Waist in Hip in Arm in
XS 32–33 25–26 35–36 30–30.5
S 34–35 27–28 37–38 30.5–31
M 36–37.5 29–30 39–40 31–31.5
L 38.5–40.5 31.5–33 41.5–43 32–32.5

2XL 46–48 39–41 48–50 33.5–34

Women’s Bottoms

Numeric waist sizes; regular inseam shown. Select short/tall on product page when available.

Size Waist in Hip in Inseam R in

10 / M 30 40 31
12 / L 31.5 41.5 31

Base-layer bottoms run slimmer next to skin; rain/insulated bottoms use the same waist size with added room. If between waist and hip, use hip for relaxed pants and waist for fitted styles.

How to Measure

  • Chest / bust Arms relaxed at sides, measure around the fullest part under the armpits, keep tape level.[12](@ref)
  • Waist Measure around the natural waist at the narrowest point, usually just above the hip bones.[3](@ref)
  • Hip / seat Stand with feet hip-width apart, measure around the widest part of the hips/seat.[2](@ref)
  • Arm / sleeve With arm slightly bent, measure from center back of neck, across the shoulder, to the wrist bone.[12](@ref)
  • Inseam From the crotch seam down the inside leg to the ankle; for boots, measure to the floor.[3](@ref)
  • Hand / glove Measure palm circumference around the knuckles without the thumb; check model-specific cuff notes separately.

Use a flexible tape, measure over lightweight clothing, and avoid pulling the tape tight. For layering, remeasure while wearing your usual base layer.

Fit Types

Next-to-skinBase layers and lightweight shirts. Close fit for moisture control; choose true body size.
Regular / activeMidlayers and everyday technical tops. Room for a base layer, not bulky; true size for most users.
Relaxed / outerSoft shells, insulation and rain shells. Cut for base + mid + insulation; size up one if stacking heavy midlayers.

Suggested Layering by Condition

Warm / high-output Base top and bottom only, or base plus lightweight venting outer. Same size across layers.
Mild / variable Base layer + midlayer fleece + lightweight outer pant/jacket. Same size works; if midlayer is thick, outer one size up.
Cold Base layer + midlayer + insulated jacket + waterproof shell. Insulated and shell pieces may each need one size up over heavy midlayers.
Severe / static Base + heavy midlayer + synthetic/down insulation + full waterproof shell. Size shell for maximum stack; do not double two rigid outer shells in the same size.

General rule: a base, mid, insulated and rain piece in the same body size will stack for most conditions. If you regularly wear two heavy midlayers under a soft shell, size the soft shell up one. Never size a rain shell down to force insulation underneath—it compresses loft and reduces warmth.[6](@ref)

Should I size up for layering?

If you only add a base layer, stay true to body size. For fleece plus insulation plus shell, size outer pieces up one. Soft shells with multiple midlayers also benefit from one size up.

My chest and waist suggest different sizes—which do I use?

For jackets and tops, use chest. For pants and belts, use waist. For one-piece suits, choose by the larger of the two and note alterations.

Do these numbers match the garment tag?

No. Tables show body measurements. Actual garment circumferences vary by fabric stretch, style and fit type; check the product page for model-specific notes.

What if I am between inseam lengths?

Choose regular if within 0.5 in; choose tall if you wear hiking boots or prefer full coverage, short if ankle break is preferred. Untaped hems can be altered.

Do base layers shrink?

Merino blends may relax slightly when wet and recover after drying; synthetics stay stable. Follow cold-wash, flat-dry care labels. If between sizes in merino, choose the closer size for next-to-skin use.

{{BRAND}} size charts are starting points only. Real fit depends on fabric, stretch, style and personal preference. When a product page lists model measurements and garment spec, follow that product first.
